Our Story

Imagine a sunny May morning. Your wife, mother, daughter, or girlfriend gets up early for a hike, a run, or a dog walk. She lives in a second floor condominium with a nice balcony overlooking the Phoenix Mountains. The sun is just up, and she’s deciding what to wear for her morning activity. She ducks outside on the balcony to check the morning air, and it still feels just a little cool in her nightgown. She turns back to the arcadia door to get dressed for the trail and…it won’t open!

“Why would that door stick, I just cleaned that door jamb in April! Gosh darn it, what’s going on here?”

Several tries later, reality sinks in.

“How the heck did this happen?  I’VE LOCKED MYSELF OUT OF MY OWN HOME!”

No cell phone. No shoes. No ladder. No extra key stashed away. Yikes!

More reality sinks in.

  • When will someone even walk by below? It’s still pretty early….
  • Who should I call and how?
  • How long will it take for someone to get here?
  • How the heck will I get off this balcony?
  • How much will it cost and how will I pay for whatever they have to do to get back in the house?
  • How late am I going to be to work?
  • Will have to tell my husband/boyfriend/father this happened?
  • How long will I be sitting out here in my nightgown?

Yes, dear reader, this actually happened to our founder and owner, Laura Ann Bartlett. A simple mistake led to complicated day.

  • Thanks to a neighbor walking by with his dog, a locksmith was called.
  • Thanks to another neighbor whose house was being painted, a ladder was obtained, so she did not have to leap from the balcony to the gravel below.
  • Thanks to reasonably skilled locksmith, the lock was drilled and replaced.
  • Thanks to the door finally being opened, she was finally able to get dressed and off to work.

With the memory of this crazy experience indelibly etched in her mind, she saw a very unique business opportunity when she invested in Pop-A-Lock, an opportunity to:

  • Provide a valuable service to the entire community
  • Help people when they need it most
  • Protect customers’ families, homes, and businesses from peculiar circumstances and unscrupulous crooks
  • Create careers and financial security for employees who are willing to go wherever/whenever needed, and deal with crazy situations
  • And, make it fun for everyone involved….even that customer stuck on the second floor balcony

Everyone has a crazy locksmith story. Tell us yours…
